Information technology allows people to create web sites, databases, software programs, and other applications that will bring information to those who are looking for it. There are many ways to share information including web content, graphic design, multimedia design, data storage, and computer programs. The internet makes use of all of these options, and as it expands, new programs will be needed to store additional information as it becomes available. Students who want to pursue a career in information technology will have to complete the following courses in order to graduate: computer applications, database storage, computer systems, computer science, graphic design, and programming. Students will be able to choose which area of information technology they would like to study and will have to take additional courses in these areas while earning their degree.
The process of storing information relies on creating and maintaining databases that can be updated easily. Company databases and internet databases can both be very large. This can be a problem as there is only so much space on a network system. Implementing a larger network or finding ways to downsize the database are options that those who work in information technology departments will have to consider. Through group interaction, and by using problem solving and critical thinking skills, teams will devise plans that will benefit the company.
Those who are interested in developing computer software or web design will have to take courses in computer systems in order to learn more about computers and what they are capable of. Web applications include web design, web navigation, and how to work on the internet are skills that will be taught. Creating software that will make creating and running web sites is also important. The sharing of information in an open forum is the goal of the internet. Information technology personnel make sure this is possible.
