Antiques Store Manager
To be a successful antiques store manager requires the person to know the difference between an antique, collectible and memorabilia, so when they go shopping for antiques for their store, they know exactly what to purchase. An antique is something that is old and has monetary value because of historical reasons or its aesthetics. They usually consider an item that is older than one hundred years, an antique but some antique store managers among others, consider Canadian pieces over fifty years, antique. That is because Canada is a relatively young country compared to places such as Asia and Europe. Others apply the one hundred year definition to Canada also.
Collectibles have historical value, aesthetic value, or are mass-produced, such as beanie babies, but are less than one hundred years old. Items associated with specific people such as a piece of clothing worn by Elvis or a signed photo of the Beatles is collectible. While collectibles usually serve no purpose, memorabilia does, such as old movie posters, musical instruments and cameras. An antiques store manager knows the difference, as they have the experience necessary to travel and purchase antiques for their shop.
An antique store manager purchases antiques by traveling to domestic and foreign sites. They are responsible for hiring temporary labor to collect and unload merchandise containers. He or she knows how to care for antiques and refurnish the merchandise, to keep their store well stocked. They are knowledgeable about each antique, display them and put a value on them. An antiques store manager must be dedicated to their interest in antiques
Common work activities include:
- Attending estate and other sales to locate antiques for the store or under specific requests by customers.
- Appraising, valuing and purchasing antiques that are brought into the store for sale.
- Renovating, repairing and refurnishing antique items using appropriate methods that do not detract from the value of the item.
- Correctly pricing antique items in the store, being able to authenticate the item.
- Providing insurance information and appraisal values for antique collections.
- Hiring, training and scheduling staff, overseeing the daily operation of the store.
