Food Services Distribution General Manager

Food Services Distribution General Manager

The food services distribution general manager is in charge of operations of the food services distribution center. He or she supervises the everyday work activities at the distribution center so that their personnel distribute the food in a cost effective and timely fashion. The general manager monitors the distribution center, including the food and building services, shipping, receiving and mailroom, evaluates their effectiveness, and discusses any concerns with the supervisor of the departments.

The food services distribution general manager is involved in hiring, training, supervising the support personnel, and evaluating their performance, delegating work and supervising the supervisors. Computers play a big part in maintaining the food services distribution within budgetary constraints and implements cost reductions, when necessary. They keep lost and damaged shipment activity records, implement safety-training sessions and record any onsite injuries for insurance purposes and reporting requirements.

The food services distribution general manager oversees all distribution issues and deals with the appropriate supervisors, when there are questions or issues that need addressing. Because the margins are critical, the general manager does most of the non-profit bidding and has final approval on all the outgoing payments. Because a lot of their work involves the use of a computer system, a food services distribution general manager needs to be familiar with computerized material movement, record keeping, shipping and receiving and the food services distribution centers inventory systems. The general manager must be able to handle stress, as there are many deadlines, government regulations and margins to deal with.

Common work activities include:

  • Monitoring and overseeing all activities in the distribution center from deliveries to storage systems on to shipments and arrival at the restaurants.
  • Monitoring and correcting any incorrect storage issues such as food stored at incorrect temperatures, food that is spoiled on delivery or issues with out-of-date product arriving at restaurants.
  • Accessing all computerized data to be able to track the flow of food items through the distribution center.
  • Training, supervising and hiring staff to work within the center.
  • Delegating work to supervisors, completing daily or weekly management meetings and informing supervisors of any issues or problems that have been noted.
  • Handling and responding to customer complaints, employee issues within the distribution center as well as monitoring performance and completing staff evaluations for supervisors.
