Food Services Staffing Manager

Food service managers oversee the daily operation of restaurants and other public or private food establishments, which not only prepare, but also serve meals to customers. They are responsible for coordinating the flow of food from the kitchen to the dining room and/or banquet hall to ensure that the patrons dining experience is pleasant. They oversee ordering supplies, equipment, food, the inventory, administrative functions, upkeep and maintenance of the restaurant. They often act as the food services staffing manager, depending on the size of the restaurant, and are responsible for recruiting and hiring new employees, monitoring their performance and making sure they have the adequate training required.
Food services staffing managers must have exceptional communication skills as they deal with a very diverse group of staff and clientele. They are responsible for interviewing prospective employees and hiring them. They train them or oversee their training, supervise the shifts, and when necessary, terminate their employment. A major challenge, especially in the fast food service industry, is keeping good employees. Food services staffing managers often recruit new employees at job fairs or schools that offer culinary or hospitality programs or place advertisements in the local newspaper.
Once hired, the food services staffing manager oversees the new employees training and makes sure they understand the establishments polices. The manager makes up the work schedule, putting enough people on to cover every shift. It is up to them to get a replacement when an employee gets sick or is away and cannot work their shift.
Common work activities include:
- Oversees all aspects of staffing, staff training and staff supervision.
- Provides specific training to groups of staff for waiting banquets, formal events, setting up tables or even dealing with specific cultural groups.
- Setting staff schedules to ensure the appropriate number of staff will always be available in the restaurant, kitchen and clean-up areas.
- Maintaining a roster of on-call workers that can be called up if a regularly scheduled employee is ill or cannot work.
- Attending job fairs, community events and colleges to recruit new staff into the food service industry.
- Hiring seasonal employees during busy holidays or seasons and ensuring that they are properly trained and supervised.
