Hardware Store Customer Service Representative

Hardware Store Customer Service Representative

A hardware store customer service representative is responsible for answering inquiries about the merchandise or services that the hardware store proves, so the customer finds the product or service they require. They answer the phone calls that come into the store and direct the calls to the proper departments. A customer service worker also deals with customers in person and answers their inquiries, shows them where the merchandise or service they require is and handles any complaints they have. If they are unable to help the customer with their problem they pass the customers inquiries on to a specialist that can solve the problem.

To work in customer services require extensive computer knowledge. They keep accurate records of all customer inquiries and complaints on the computer, along with the hardware store inventory. This makes it easier to know if an item someone requests is in stock, on backorder or unavailable. In large hardware stores, the customer service representative sits at a workstation, answers the telephone wearing a headset and uses a computer to enter the data they receive. Customer services use the computer to audit inventory levels and generate pricing signs.

In a hardware store, the customer service department works with all the different departments in the store to make sure that a customer who comes in or calls, receives courteous, prompt, accurate service. Working with the public is often very demanding. People working in customer service must always remain polite and helpful and this is an important aspect of the job.

Common work activities include:

  • Providing training to store employees on various materials sold in the store to help employees answer customer questions.
  • Answering custom phone calls and directing the call to the correct department or individual that is best able to answer the question.
  • Directing customers in the store to the areas where specific merchandise can be located.
  • Handling customer complaints with products or service in the store.
  • Managing inventory through the use of various computer software programs that work directly through manual data entry or point of sale inventory control through cash registers.
