Grocery Meat Department Manager

In the grocery meat department, managers often work in large supermarket chains or small grocery stores, in a challenging retail environment. In a grocery store, the meat department manager is responsible for making sure that the meat department runs smoothly and effectively. He or she directly supervises the entire department's daily operations, often with the help of an assistant meat manager and other associates or staff. They are responsible for supervising the assistant meat manager, meat cutter, meat clerks and other associates and seeing that they follow the company's procedures and policies. He or she must conduct himself or herself in a professional, polite and efficient manner, as they are a role model for the staff. The meat department manager normally works directly under the grocery store manager.
Some of the meat department mangers responsibilities includes, achieving sales, setting inventory goals for the meat department and merchandising. They control the expenditures and resources. The meat manager also orders the products, are involved in production planning, merchandising and responsible for the quality of the products they sell. They need great organization skills to keep the department running smoothly. The meat manager displays the meat, and does the shelf allocation, pricing and product organizing.
A meat department manager requires great problem solving and communication skills, to deal with not only customers but also staff members. They must effectively supervise their staff, make the schedules up and let people go, when necessary. Most are required to understand and operate a store computer.
Common work activities include:
- Hiring, training and supervision of staff in the department.
- Ensuring that all staff are following correct procedures when using meat saws, knives and other potentially dangerous equipment.
- Meeting with representatives from packing plants and distributors to order fresh, frozen and processed meats.
- Working with the budget developed by the manager of the store to ensure that the appropriate amounts of various types of meat are purchased and priced according to the market.
- Planning and advertising sales and specials according to the marketing plan and the budget.
- Handling customer complaints, questions or requests for information about the various meat and meat products that they sell.
