Boston University was established in 1869 by three successful Methodist businessmen. They envisioned and created a university that was all inclusive. They accepted students from the very beginning no matter their sex, race or religion. They proudly note some of their graduates have made history. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is an alumnus of Boston University; he received his doctorate from the Graduate School of Arts. Some other notable alumni include the first woman to earn a Ph. D., the first woman to be admitted to the bar in Massachusetts, the first Native American to graduate with a doctorate in medicine and the first African-American psychiatrist in the United States.
Boston University is a private urban research university. The school has been accredited by New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc. It consists of seventeen schools and colleges and more than two hundred fifty fields of study. Many of the individual classes offered through the virtual classroom. Online graduate certificates available are Asian religions and healing, clinical investigation, emergency management and organizational continuity, entrepreneurship, instructional technology, natural science education and project management. Their undergraduate program is specially designed for students who have college credit but have not yet finished their degree requirements. They accept students into the online program year round.
The distance education graduate level courses are a variety of Master’s degrees and two doctoral degrees. Through Boston University’s online campus you can earn Master’s degrees in criminal justice, music, music education, computer information systems, management (several different concentrations), and occupational therapy. Musical arts and music education is one doctoral degree. Transitional doctorate in physical therapy is the other doctoral degree.
Financial aid is available for those who qualify to help students pay for their education. They offer loans, grants, scholarships, payment plans. They participate in federal education programs such as Stafford loans, PLUS loans and Pell grants. Masters and doctoral seeking students can get assistance for financial aid directly through their degree programs as well. Students are advised to speak with a financial aid advisor to determine what financial aid is available to them.
