Founded in 1951 in Southern California, Grantham University was part of the late twentieth century movement to expand educational opportunities. As time went on the school expanded its campuses across the United States and eventually began offering distance education programs to its student body. This made it easier to get students living outside the metropolitan areas to obtain an education and non traditional students such as working adults to be able to further advance their careers. 1991 saw the university combine all its campuses into one in New Orleans. They consolidated into one physical campus and began offering more courses and programs online. Plans were in the works to open a satellite campus in Kansas City, Missouri. In the wake of Katrina the University moved in its entirety to Kansas City. It took the school only seven days to move. Most of the New Orleans campus was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.

Grantham University is a full accredited school. They have been accredited by the Distance Education and Training Counsel and the Missouri Department of Higher Education. It is a member of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. The university is affiliated with several other associations for higher education: American Council on Education, American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, United States Distance Learning Association.

The university does not participate in federal Title IV educational finance programs. However it does offer special financing, veterans and active duty military discounts, alternative private lenders for educational loans and a variety of scholarships. Many employers offer tuition reimbursement plans as well. Students are advised to speak with a financial aid counselor to get help with putting together an equitable financial aid package.

Courses and degree programs that are available on line focus on business, technology and criminal justice. Associate, Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees are available. Degrees can be earned one hundred percent online with no classroom attendance. Students communicate via email, discussion boards and other online mediums. Students have the same access to support services, academic services and library resources that a traditional student has. The courses are typically self paced and the student has eight weeks to complete each course.
