Loyola University was founded in 1870 by the Society of Jesus, also known as Jesuits. Its original name was St. Ignatius College. There are three campuses in Chicago (Lake Shore, Water Tower and Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood). There is also a campus in Rome, Italy. It is a private Catholic College full accredited by the North Central Association.

There are nine schools and colleges, arts and sciences, business administration, education, graduate studies, law, nursing, medicine, professional studies and social work.. The different schools offer sixty-nine undergraduate majors, sixty-nine minors, seventy-seven masters degrees, thirty-six doctoral degrees and three professional degree programs.

Amongst Loyola??s many degree programs it has also set up a specific school for working adults. Realizing that many adults would like to return to school but have other obligations that keep them from attending traditional classes they have created the School of Continuing Education and Professional studies. These have evening classes available at the Water Town campus location.

In addition to the School of Continuing Education and Professional Studies Loyola University offers some online degree programs and courses as well. Currently students can obtain a Bachelors of Science in Nursing and a Masters of Art in Bioethics online. Many of the general courses are also offered via their online program as well. Loyola uses a popular distance learning software Blackboard to allow students to communicate with their teachers, classmates, turn in homework assignments, take tests and quizzes. They can email, join in discussion threads and use chat forums to communicate.

The Office of Student Financial Assistance is prepared to help students finance their education at Loyola. While it is a private institution Loyola University does participate in federally funded loan, grant and work study programs. They offer PLUS Loans, alternative education loans, scholarships and budget tuition. The school offers special assistance for the Accelerated Bachelors of Science in Nursing. It also has special services for veterans and active military personnel.
