Norwich University was founded in 1819 by Captain Alden Partridge. His goal was to provide an educational center that combined military and civilian learning centers. Vermont College was established in Norwich, Vermont. During his life and since the same goals of a general liberal arts curriculum to produce well rounded students are a primary priority of the school. Through out its over 175 years the small college has evolved into one of the elite private military/civilian campuses. It was Captain Partridge’s philosophy that led to the establishment of ROTC programs at Colleges and Land Grant Universities. ROTC is an acronym for Reserved Officer Training Corps. This is allows young people to receive their military and civilian career training at the same time. Upon graduation they can enter the military with officer status.
In 1981 with the acquisition of Goddard College Norwich University was able to begin to supply the new demand for adult education. A creation of self paced programs of study with a flexible schedule was made available. With today’s technology they have expanded to include online class and degree programs, focusing Master’s level courses for their distance learning. Internet or online courses are held via email, video, various chat programs and the use of a software called WebCT that allows instructors and professors to create their lectures, structure their classes and manage their students electronically.
Norwich University has been accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. The university offers both bachelors and master’s degrees in a number of fields. Their primary focus being on a very liberal education for undergraduate degrees, their undergraduate major and minors available reflect this in their diversity covering the natural, physical and social sciences. They also include athletic courses and degree programs and technology courses and degree programs. Their graduate school offers Masters degrees in electrical engineering, civil engineering, business administration, diplomacy, justice administration, information assurance, military history, nursing, public administration, organizational leadership and education.
The school is unique in its approach to education, by combining civilian and military students, by leading the United States in educational firsts and by maintaining the same integrity with which it was founded even while advancing quickly with today’s changing technology.
Norwich University offers standard financial aid packages to all students who fill out their forms in a timely fashion. The federal and school forms will help to determine what aid is available to each student. Aside from standard federal financial aid, there are ROTC scholarships, academic scholarships as well. Students are encouraged to speak with their financial aid advisor regarding all payment options and outside scholarship searches.
