Regis University began in 1877 as Las Vegas College and was originally located in Las Vegas, New Mexico. The University was started by exiled Italian Jesuits. Seven years later they were invited to the Denver area by Bishop Machebeuf. The school was relocated in 1884 to Morrison, Colorado and renamed Sacred Heart College. In 1887 a gentleman by the name of John Brisben Walker donated land for a new building. It took only 100 days to build the exterior, the interior took much longer to complete. 1921 Sacred Heart College changed its name to Regis College for many reason. The name Regis was chosen because of John Francis Regis a Jesuit saint who worked in the mountains. 1959 Regis College was granted accreditation and became Regis University. There have been many other landmark changes at the school.
Regis University consists of the original Regis College, offering a wide variety of liberal arts courses and degree programs, Rueckert-Hartman School for Health Professions, offering a degree as a doctor of physical therapy and School for Professional Studies, offering degrees in accounting and business careers, computers, marketing, public administration and many other programs. Graduate level programs are offered as Master’s degrees in education, arts, counseling, business administration, computer information technology, management, software information systems and non profit management. Regis University offers online degree programs through two of its colleges: The School for Professional Studies and Rueckert-Hartman College. The same instructors and professors that teach on the physical campuses also teach the online programs. All the instructors currently work in the same field that they teach in. This lends “real-world” experience to the classroom.
The university offers classes at several campuses: Northwest Denver, Denver Tech Center, Boulder, Interlocken at Broomfield, Colorado Springs, Fort Collins and Las Vegas. All campuses are accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
Though Regis University is a private institution it does have standard financial aid packages. The standard Title IV funding such as subsidized and unsubsidized federal and alternative education loans, grants such as the Pell Grant and federal work study programs. There are also a wide variety of scholarships available through the university. And they also accept outside alternative loans, scholarships and grants.
