South University began during Reconstruction in beautiful Savannah, Georgia. It was created by Dr. John Draughon in 1899 and was originally named Draughon’s Practical Business College. Now it is home to several campuses through the southeastern shore of the United States. Those other locations are: Columbia, SC, Montgomery, AL, Tampa, FL and West Palm Beach, FL.
South University began as a two-year school offering only an associates degree in business. It has since grown and now encompasses three different learning styles and offers degrees in a variety of fields at each location. They also offer degrees from associates to master’s. They have just recently added several Master’s level programs including a Master’s of Science in Nursing and in Business Administration.
There are three primary schools offering degree programs at South University: The School of Business, The School of Health Professions and The School of Pharmacy. The School of Business offers degrees varying from information technology, business administration and paralegal studies to graphic design, health care management and criminal justice. The School of Health Professions offers degrees in nursing, physical therapy assistants, medical assistants, physician assistant and allied health. The School of Pharmacy is accredited by The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education Accreditation.
South University and its various schools hold several highly sought after accreditations. The first of those is the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The Medical Assisting program has been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. The Legal studies and paralegal studies programs have been approved by the American Bar Association. The Physical Therapist Assisting program has been accredited by the American Physical Therapy Association. There are several state accreditation programs as well. Most of the campuses have also been certified to help train and instruct our nation’s veterans.
South University offers financial aid to all qualifying students. This aid package can come in the form of federal loan, grant and work study programs. There are scholarships available as well. Financial Aid counselors are available to help students finance their education.
South University is unique in the way the have set up their programs. They offer traditional classroom experience, online only educations and what they have termed their “Plus” program which combines both the traditional and online education options. All are open to all students.
