Dr. John Sperling founded the University of Phoenix in 1976. He was a Cambridge educated economist and professor. He saw into the future with the advent of the Apple 1 computer how technology would affect both the work place and institutions of higher learning. With this foresight at hand Dr. Sperling created the University to be able to educate a large numbers working adults in formal higher education.
During the last twenty-five years the University has been heralded as a leader in the field of adult education. The school is constantly updating it’s formats, online access and ways in which it can give students real time experience while still allowing them to work full time jobs.
University of Phoenix offers certificate non degree programs, associates, bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees in many fields. They primarily offer degrees in the field of technology. They also offer degrees in nursing and business administration. They are expanding their degrees to offer programs in electronic commerce, criminal justice and education.
One of the school’s goals is to provide access to the working adult population in as many of the current fields as possible. Their Non degree programs are designed to assist working adults with enhanced job skills in their related fields. The primary goal is to provide the student with additional certifications and qualifications for advancement with their current employer.
The University of Phoenix has quite a few accreditations to its name. They have been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission; they are a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Both their Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing programs also hold accreditation with the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
At all their physical and online campus arenas the university offers traditional federal loan and grant programs to assist their students in paying for furthering their education. They also offer access to a variety of scholarships. University of Phoenix participates directly with a large number of employers for the employee tuition assistance program. Where the employer reimburses tuition for all courses that the student receives a C or better in and is approved by the employer prior to the student’s enrollment.
The entire college is unique in that their classes start on a rolling schedule and last for six weeks at a time. Students take one course at a time, on a fairly self paced venue. They have direct contact via web conferencing, Blackboard, email, phone and fax with their instructors. Realizing that many of the instructors are currently working in the very field for which they were hired to teach. There are group projects and discussions to be done for each class. There is almost complete flexibility for the working adult to get their class work done, tests taken and receive help and tutoring when necessary.
