West Virginia University's high-profile status, large size and diverse array of organizations and degree programs only serve to welcome each of its students into the campus community, not make them feel isolated. Through research partnerships with professors, special freshman orientation programs and other student-focused activities and services, WVU pledges to serve its students first. In turn, WVU students spotlight their university by becoming Rhodes Scholars, Truman Scholars, USA Today All-USA College Academic team members, outstanding athletes, and leaders in their respective industries.
Founded in Morgantown, West Virginia, in 1867, WVU honors its traditions of academic excellence and student involvement by promoting close faculty-student partnerships and mentorships, challenging students to perform above average in their research and course work, and involving students in career-oriented degree programs to strengthen the skills that will make them valuable players in the competitive workforce.
Academically, students at WVU enjoy a wide variety of majors and minors, some of which can be studied at the Bachelor's, Master's and Doctorate levels. From Advertising to Biochemistry to Interior Design to Rehabilitation Counseling, students will find WVU's degree programs scholastically satisfying and worthwhile preparation for when they start their careers. The Honors College provides ambitious students with smaller class sizes and separate residential halls as well as other connections and perks. Faculty members are encouraged to involve their students in the course work and in their own research projects, which are developed at WVU's many centers and institutes including the Institute of Combinatorial Computing and Discrete Mathematics and the Virtual Medical Center.
Hundreds of student organizations mean that the student body at WVU always has a place to socialize, play sports and share their talents with others. The school's football team won the 2008 Fiesta Bowl, and other sports teams have also been regionally and nationally recognized. Besides sports, students participate in study abroad programs, cultural groups, volunteering, student government, work-study jobs, career development and counseling sessions and more.
